There are many ways to be part of the garden.
BLCG Membership: You can become a member and grow with the garden in an allotment plot, the plots are approximately 5' X 20'. You can also choose to take part in the communal in-ground crops if you like (such as potatoes). Membership is a flat $20 fee per season. You pay for membership, not per plot. No additional charge for communal crop plots. All members are asked to take part in some general care taking of the garden as a whole. Some light garden work is tended to in work bees with the aid of non-member volunteers. To join please contacted us through our "contact" page or through our Facebook page. Allotment plots fill up by late March so please check for availability. You can choose to be added to the wait list if the garden is full. You will find our membership rules in a downloadable version here on our "BLCGS documents" page along with sign up forms and our liability waiver. You will also find our rules on the "about the garden" page with additional information about the garden and community garden society. To see who runs the community garden look here. You can find printed sign-up forms at the Burns Lake Public Library. |
Volunteer for the BLCG:
We have many opportunities for people to volunteer at the community garden. We put up requests on our Facebook page for volunteer help through out the gardening season. Most of these requests involve light labour at our work bees. If you "like" and follow the page you will see these events in your timeline. If you are not on Facebook but would like to be notified of these opportunities we can add you to our email list just contact us here.
We also have a number of communal areas you can sign up to care take of. Tasks include things like weeding and watering of the berry bushes and fruit trees. There are also collectively cared for planters and garden beds that may need additional care throughout the spring and summer months.
Occasionally we need volunteers for larger projects, you can see some examples on our "thank-you's" page. If you are interested in these opportunities contact us here (or via Facebook messenger) and we can add your contact information to our volunteer network.

BLCG Friends of the garden program:
The Burns Lake community gardens friends of the garden program is a more formal version of volunteering with us. For $10 you are added to our program. This fee adds you to our insurance and serves to keep the garden running, it pays for minor upkeep and the little things (gas for the lawn mower etc.) that are difficult to find funding for.
You are welcome to donate the $20 membership fee for gardeners, who may not be able to afford it if you like. If you donate the membership fee for a gardener your name will be added to our garden shed wall (coming soon). Friends of the garden are informed of our workshops and work bees via email along with garden members. You will also be informed of volunteer positions at the garden.
You can find downloadable friends of the garden sign-up forms and liability waivers here. Further information about the garden and this program can also be found here.

Other ways to support the BLCG: The community garden can use garden oriented donations. Money and time are not the only ways to help the garden. Things like mulch, manure, and soil or building supplies, whether new or salvaged can be used. Also seeds, composters, planters and pots. There are random materials we can make into garden beds, composters and rainwater collection systems like gutters, culverts and the large plastic barrels commonly used for automotive fluids. If you have something you think the community garden could use please contact us via email here or message us on Facebook. |
