Today we officially opened the Compost Demonstration Area of the Burns Lake Community Garden. A special thank you to the BULKLEY NECHAKO REGIONAL DISTRICT for providing the funds to make this happen. Thank you to SAMANTHA YOUNG-FINCH for her inspiring presentation on various types of compost systems. She talked about Triple Bin Composters, Rotating Barrel Composters, Tire Tower Composters, Wire Composters, and the new African Keyhole Garden that has been installed at the garden. And thank you to NATHAN NICHOLS for sharing his experience with worm composters. It was awesome to have the opportunity to learn from each other. All the compost systems at the community garden will have signs attached outlining how they can be used.

This is the donated load of clean sand that came from RANDY WILSON CONTRACTING. We filled the sandbox with it and spread the remainder on the new in ground potato beds.

A big thank you to EVERYONE who came out for the community gardens fall work bee. Thank you for helping make the garden such a great success. This is the community's garden and it is a reflection of our wonderful community!
I didn't get photos of everyone or all the tasks we accomplished sadly (I think there are more photos to come though). We sure got a lot done in short time!

Today the Board Members of the Burns Lake Community Garden Society took some very basic and readily available materials and created an African keyhole garden. This composting garden bed was created almost entirely out of found and salvaged material. Some basic building skills and tools were used to create a garden that feeds itself, all you need to do is add your kitchen waste to the central composter.

July 23, 2016 The Community Garden got 2 huge in-ground garden beds today. They are meant for a communal potato patch, for raspberries, rhubarb, big or spreading plants that are not suitable for the normal beds. Big thank-you's to LAKES DISTRICT MAINTENANCE for providing the truck, and to TRENT PAYNE (Silver Sky Farms) for doing all the backhoe work. Trent dug up the existing clay and replaced it with good garden soil. We also got some work done on the base for the sandbox under the smaller roof. ~Beate Marquardt |

Thank you to JAKE GIESBRECHT for constructing the best ever Triple Bin Composter. The end walls are made from pallets donated by BURNS LAKE AUTOMOTIVE. The materials for the slatted walls were donated by DECKER LAKE FOREST PRODUCTS. Labour for unloading the bin was provided by LAKES DISTRICT MAINTENANCE ROAD CREW. Recycled tin donated from BILL BUECKERT made a nice base that will prevent weeds and roots from coming up underneath. A nice effort by a whole group of local people and businesses.

A message from Beatrice Michell Pittock of MORRIS WILLIAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. This without a doubt will be one of the great gardening moments of my year.

“I’m so proud of my students, the grade 1 & 2 Class at MWE went to visit the Burns Lake Community Garden. We learned about the vegetable "squash," this week, so the students could plant their squash at community garden, Thank you to Tracey Payne, and the other volunteers at the community garden. The students enjoyed learning about squash, seeing some squash and then planting their own squash plant. Then this afternoon after the field trip, the students had squash muffins and lemonade, and watched a magic school bus clip on a gardening. Thank to my classroom assistants Rachel Groen and Marion Smith for also helping, planning and making this week a success. Mesiy cho to Tracey Payne, and the other community garden volunteers and the students for a great day learning about "Squash :) "

Thank You is almost not enough. Without the generous contribution of a truck and gravel from LAKES DISTRICT MAINTENANCE there would never be a spacious and safe parking lot suitable for senior drivers to park and turn around without difficulty. And I could never say enough about TRENT PAYNE SILVER SKY BACKHOE SERVICE. Except that he makes it all smooth. It's great that he sees how he can support people’s efforts to grow their own food. Picture 1 & 2 are essentially a before and after.

Great to see RAY DUECK, JOHN MUSSICK, and JAKE GIESBRECHT toiling away between rain showers. They are trying to complete the shelter that will protect the new sandbox and kids play area.

Thank You to ALBERT GIESBRECHT who showed up at a Tuesday night get together in the garden and volunteered to do a dump run. He removed a pick up load of old rusted wire from the fence fixing job. Without the support of helpful people the garden would not be looking so pretty.

Thank you to RAY DUECK for constructing the new covered sand box. When he wasn’t standing in a hole measuring up the foundation for the new garden shed, Ray found time to build a super-sized sand box for some super-sized fun! Soon the box will be filled with sand and installed in its new home under a roof near the new garden shed.

A special thank you to GEORGE JANZEN! Who has patiently clipped and in some cases dug out the bottom of the weed filled page wire fence. Days of clip, clip, clip – more than 480 feet of fence! What a difference from the weed filled fence of last fall (last photo). Notice the nice weed free fence behind the new fruit trees.

THANK YOU! DON MAGWOOD and BEATE MARQUARDT for constructing the 4 new garden beds #18 - #21. They look great! And thanks to my husband, Trent Payne - Silver Sky Farms - Backhoe Service, for filling the beds tonight with fresh soil. Thanks also to the gardeners who showed up tonight. The Burns Lake Community Garden Society would like to give a big thanks to the LAKES ARTISAN CENTRE and it's talented members. We have used the Lakes Artisan Centre for meetings, as a drop off point for paper work, and now as the location for pick up and drop off of our allotment plot sign up forms, and friends of the garden membership forms. Thank you all so very much! ~Samantha Young-Finch |

We had a very successful work bee today. The water system has been upgraded thanks to some hard work and a bit of play. It was a very enjoyable time despite the cold weather. A huge thank you to EVERYONE who showed up, even the Mormon Elders gave a hand! It was great.

On Oct 13th VILLAGE OF BURNS LAKE COUNCIL unanimously recommended that staff be directed to create a public access point to the Community Garden from Nault Drive. We are thrilled to have the full support of Mayor and Council. Thanks to them; and the terrific staff in the public works department, the garden will have a new front door. Greatly improving access and parking via Nault Drive, for seniors or individuals with mobility issues. The existing fence and water tap had to be reconfigured.

Thank you very much to SILVER SKY FARMS (Trent Payne) for his time, effort, and backhoe yesterday. All the thistle infested soil has been dug out and trucked away from the community garden. A huge thank you to LAKES DISTRICT MAINTENANCE for the use of a dump truck. It was a very tight fit to get the truck into the garden. See the last photos for the results.
